Using American Standard Toilets As Part of a Water Conservation Strategy

Review

While everyone who currently uses a flush toilet would ideally be using composting toilets, which don't require even a drop of water as they are non-flushing, this reality may still be a ways off. In the meantime, a low-flow American Standard Toilet can be a viable alternative until composting toilets can enter the mainstream, which they will have to if our descendants are to have any drinking water.

As things stand, we wash away our wastes with drinking water. There are many things that are very wrong with this, three of which are:

American Toilet

1. Our "waste" can easily be converted to valuable fertilizer, but we throw them away instead.
2. There is no "away" when it comes to throwing things, they just go somewhere else. In the case of our wastes, they go into polluting our land and water.
3. Using drinking water to wash away wastes is INSANE when it's not necessary, any way you look at it. And just in case you think otherwise, it's absolutely NOT necessary to use drinking water to flush our urine and feces.

Let's start with the most simple way everybody can begin to save water right away. It actually involves not doing something, and so is easier than what we've been doing. Simply don't flush the toilet when you urinate. Put the seat down. That urine isn't going to jump out and attack you. This way, you end up not wasting up to 1.6 gallons of drinking water each time you have to release a little pee. Flush when you go in for a number 2.

Another way to save water is to use greywater to flush the toilet.

Finally, installing a low-flow toilet like the models made by American Standard are good if you can't or won't set up a composting toilet.
